Benny Brown
Benny Brown (actually: Benjamin Gene Brown ; born September 27, 1953 in San Francisco , California ; † February 1, 1996 ) was an American sprinter who was successful in the 400-meter run in the 1970s .
He reached the final several times at the US national championships:
- 1973: 3rd in 45.9 s
- 1974: 5th in 46.0 s
- 1975: 6th in 45.82 s
- 1976: 5th in 45.38 s
In 1975 Brown, who started for the University of California, Los Angeles , won the NCAA championship in 45.34 seconds .
Brown had his only significant international appearance in 1976 in the 4 x 400 meter relay of the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . The American relay team with the line-up of Herman Frazier , Brown, Fred Newhouse and Maxie Parks won the gold medal by a large margin over Poland in 2: 58.65 minutes (silver in 3: 01.43 minutes). Brown was the only relay runner who did not start in the individual races (Newhouse, Frazier and Parks all three made it to the finals).
