Davis set a world record over 400 meter hurdles with 49.5 seconds at the US Trials in Los Angeles on June 29, 1956 , making him the first runner to stay below the magical 50-second limit.

He won the three Olympic gold medals in Melbourne (November 24) over the hurdles in 50.1 s in 1956 , in Rome (September 2) over the same distance in 49.3 s in 1960 and as a member of the victorious USA relay over 4 -time 400 meters (September 8th), which ran a world record with 3: 02.2 minutes in the line-up of Jack Yerman , Earl Young , Davis and Otis Davis (before the German season, which with Hans-Joachim Reske , Manfred Kinder , Johannes Kaiser and Carl Kaufmann just behind set a European record with 3: 02.7 min).

Davis was also an excellent 400-meter runner who stayed below the 46-second mark several times on a 1958 European tour. His best time over this distance was 45.7 s over 440 yards (402.67 m), which corresponded to a transit time of 45.4 seconds for 400 meters. This took Davis a place in the top ten in this discipline.
