Rex Cawley

Rex Cawley (actually Warren Jay Cawley ; born July 6, 1940 in Farmington , Michigan ) is a retired American athlete and Olympic champion . With a height of 1.83 m, his competition weight was 75 kg.

Rex Cawley already started in the US Trials for the 1960 Olympic Games , but could not qualify in seventh place with 50.7 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles . Four years later he improved the world record of the Italian Salvatore Morale at the trials in Los Angeles with 49.1 seconds , which stood at 49.2 seconds. Behind him, William Hardin qualified with 49.8 seconds and James Luck with 50.4 seconds. At the Olympic Games in 1964 , William Hardin, son of the 1936 Olympic champion Glenn Hardin , eliminated in the semi-finals, James Luck was fifth in the final. Rex Cawley won the final in 49.6 seconds ahead of Britain's John Cooper and Salvatore Morale, who both finished in 50.1 seconds.

In 1965 Rex Cawley ended his career due to an injury.
