Kerron Stephon Clement (born October 31, 1985 in Port of Spain , Trinidad and Tobago ) is an American hurdler and sprinter .

Sports career

Clement immigrated to the United States as a teenager and attended high school in La Porte, Texas . He then studied at the University of Florida .

In March 2005, Clement set an indoor world record in the 400-meter run in Fayetteville with 44.57 s . He undercut the old world record set by Michael Johnson on March 4, 1995 by six hundredths of a second.

Since 2005, Clement has been a world leader in the 400 meter hurdles . At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he was one of the biggest favorites for the title alongside James Carter and Félix Sánchez . However, he wasted away the semifinals and was therefore placed on hole 1, which is unfavorable for the hurdles. Since it was still raining heavily in the final, he had no chance of winning this run. Ultimately, he finished fourth in 48.18 s.

At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , he won the gold medal over the 400 meter hurdles ahead of Félix Sánchez and Marek Plawgo with a time of 47.61 s .

Clement won his first Olympic medal (silver) at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 . In the final of the 400 meter hurdles he only had to admit defeat to his compatriot Angelo Taylor .

At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , he was able to defend his world champion title. He won the final with a world best time of 47.91 s ahead of Javier Culson in 48.09 s and Bershawn Jackson in 48.23 s. In addition, Clement won another gold medal at the World Championships in Berlin with the 4 x 400 meter relay of the USA.

In 2015 he qualified for the world championships for the sixth time in a row. There he only missed the podium by a hundredth of a second and had to be content with fourth place despite a season best of 48.18 s.

At the 2016 Olympic Games , he won the gold medal with his fastest time since 2007 (47.73 s) ahead of Boniface Mucheru Tumuti and Yasmani Copello .
