George Baird
George Hetzel Baird (born March 5, 1907 in Grand Island , Nebraska , † September 4, 2004 in Rhinebeck , New York ) was an American sprinter and Olympic champion who was successful in the 400-meter run in the late 1920s . He started for the University of Iowa .
Baird ran two world records in the 4 x 400 meter relay as a member of the US team in 1928 :
- on August 5th at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam : Gold in 3: 14.2 min (Team: Baird, Emerson Spencer , Fred Alderman and Ray Barbuti ) ahead of Germany (silver in 3: 14.8 min) and Canada (bronze in 3: 15.4 min). Although Baird had won the Olympic eliminations in 48.8 s, he did not start in the individual races.
- August 11, 1928 in London : 3: 13.4 min (Team: Baird, hurdles specialist Morgan Taylor , Barbuti and Spencer)
After finishing his career, George Baird appeared together with his brother Bill as a puppeteer. He later became a lecturer in education at New York University .
