Emerson Spencer
Emerson Spencer ( Emerson Lane "Bud" Spencer ; born October 10, 1906 in San Francisco , † May 15, 1985 in Palo Alto ) was an American sprinter who was successful in the 400-meter run in the late 1920s . He started for Stanford University .
His successful year was 1928.
He won 440 yards at the NCAA championships in 47.7 s. He also set three world records:
- over 400 meters on May 12, 1928 in Palo Alto in 47.0 s. He improved Ted Meredith's twelve-year-old record by four tenths of a second. It lost the record just under four years later when Ben Eastman pushed it to 46.4 s.
- as a member of the US team in the 4 x 400 meter relay :
- on August 5, 1928 at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam : gold in 3: 14.2 min (team: George Baird , Spencer, Fred Alderman and Ray Barbuti ) ahead of Germany (silver in 3: 14.8 min) and Canada (bronze in 3: 15.4 min). He was not at the start in the individual races.
- on August 11, 1928 in London : 3: 13.4 min (Team: Baird, hurdles specialist Morgan Taylor , Barbuti and Spencer)
