Julius Sang

Julius Sang (born September 19, 1948 in Kapsabet ; † April 9, 2004 in Eldoret ) was a Kenyan sprinter and Olympic champion .

Sang studied at North Carolina Central University , for which he also started during his student days. He was married to the equally remarkable runner Tekla Chemabwai .

At the beginning of his career he was a long jumper and finished eighth at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966 .

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he was eliminated over 100 meters in the preliminary run and reached the quarter-finals over 200 meters .

In 1970 he was eighth over 200 and 400 meters at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and won the 4 x 400 meter relay with the Kenyan team consisting of Munyoro Nyamau , Sang, Robert Ouko and Charles Asati .

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he won the bronze medal in the 400-meter run behind the two Americans Vince Matthews (gold) and Wayne Collett (silver) as well as the team gold medal in the 4-by-400-meter relay, together with his teammates Asati, Nyamau and Ouko, before the relay from the United Kingdom (silver) and France (bronze).

In 1974 he was eliminated from the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch over 400 meters in the semi-finals. The Kenyan relay defended its title with the cast of Asati, Francis Musyoki , William Koskei and Sang.

He died on April 9, 2004 from complications during a gastric treatment.
