Karabo Sibanda (born July 2, 1998 in Shashe-Mooke , Central District ) is a Botswana athlete who mainly competes in the 400-meter run .

Athletic career

Karabo Sibanda first competed in international athletics competitions in 2014. In May he won the 400 meters at the African Youth Championships in his home country. In July he took part in the U20 World Championships in Eugene at the age of sixteen . With the relay was disqualified, in the individual he reached the semi-finals. In August he finally won the silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing with a season best of 46.76 s. In March 2015 he won two gold medals in singles and with the relay at the U20 African Championships in Addis Ababa. A month later he also won the gold medal over 400 meters in the lower age group at the U18 African Championships in Mauritius. In July he finished fifth over the 400 meters at the U18 World Championships in Cali. At the Junior Commonwealth Games in Samoa in September, he stayed under 46 seconds for the first time in a competition and won the gold medal.

In 2016 he took part in international competitions for the first time among adults. At the national championships he was second over 400 meters. In June he competed at the African Championships in Durban. In 45.40 s he could win the silver medal. A few days later, he won gold along with the 4 x 400 meter relay. He also competed in both disciplines at the U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz. With the relay he won silver, in the individual he won the bronze medal. He qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, having turned 18 just before that. In the individual, he managed to move into the final as third in his semi-finals, in which he finished fifth with a personal best of 44.25 s. During this time, he ranked third on the all-time world's best junior list. A few days later he also moved into the final with the relay, in which the four athletes set a national record as fifth in 2: 59.06 s. with the season he also competed at the World Relays 2017 in the Bahamas, where the quartet won the silver medal. In May he became the first Botswana champion over 400 meters. At the World Championships in London, he did not make it to the next round as sixth of his heat and the relay was over after the heat. In 2018 Sibanda was eliminated in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

An injury then slowed him down for a long time.
