The Central District (German Central District ) is a district of Botswana . With an area of 147,730 km² and 638,604 inhabitants, it is the largest district in the country in terms of area and population. Larger places are Palapye , Selebi-Phikwe , Mahalapye and the district capital Serowe . The district comprises the traditional area of the Bamangwato (Bangwato) tribe of the Batswana , from which three of the four previous presidents of Botswana, Seretse Khama , Festus Mogae and Ian Khama , emerged.
Selebi-Phikwe and Sowa form their own administrative units, which are run by a town council .
The district is divided into the sub-districts Bobonong , Boteti , Mahalapye , Orapa , Serowe / Palapye and Tutume .
