Festus Gontebanye Mogae (born August 21, 1939 in Serowe ) was President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008 . He is a member of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Life

Mogae studied economics at the University of Sussex and later the University of Oxford and worked in the civil service after completing his studies. He later worked for the International Monetary Fund . From 1980 to 1982 he was Governor of the Bank of Botswana. In 1989 he became Minister of Finance and Development Planning. From 1992 he held the office of Vice President. On April 1, 1998, he succeeded Quett Masire as President. In October 2004 he was re-elected. After exactly ten years in office, he resigned on March 31, 2008. His successor was the former Vice President Ian Khama .

In 2008 Mogae was awarded the Mo Ibrahim Prize, worth 3.7 million euros, for “successful government work” and for the fight against AIDS in Botswana . In 2016 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He heads the international election observer commission for the 2019 elections in Nigeria .
