Fatshe leno la rona (German: "This our country", also: "Blessed be this noble land") is the national anthem of Botswana . It was adopted with the country's independence on September 30, 1966 .
The composition and text are by Kgalemang Tumedisco Motsete , who founded the left-wing Bechuanaland People's Party BPP (later: Botswana People's Party ) in 1960 , which advocated the independence of the British protectorate of Bechuanaland . The title of the poem "Fatshe leno la rona" became the slogan of the party, which however never won the government majority.
Unlike many other African national anthems, Botswana's anthem is not sung in the language of the former colonial power, but in the Bantu language, Setswana . The author himself also wrote an English adaptation, but it has no official status.
