Namibia, Land of the Brave is the national anthem of Namibia .

Emergence

The Constitution of Namibia of March 21, 1990 provided for a national anthem for Namibia in Article 2, but, unlike the national flag, has not yet stipulated it, but delegated the decision of a national anthem to Parliament.

After Namibia's independence in 1990, a competition with numerous composers took place to give the then still young country its own hymn. Axali Doëseb emerged from the competition as the winner . Doëseb was the leader of the folklore group Kalaharia, which went on a three-week tour through Germany in 1987 at the invitation of the German-Namibian Society .

On the 1st anniversary of independence , the new anthem was played in public for the first time under the direction of the composer and the music found unreserved approval. However, there were discussions about the text, as some musicologists believe that the linguistic accentuation does not always harmonize with the musical rhythm .

The Law on the National Anthem of the Republic of Namibia was passed on December 17, 1991. At the same time Doëseb transferred the copyright to the text and music to the Republic of Namibia.

Although not directly to be compared with the national anthem of Namibia, the Südwesterlied played and continues to play the role of an unofficial anthem among Germans in the country.
