Mungu ibariki Africa

Mungu ibariki Afrika is the national anthem of Tanzania . The melody is that of the hymn Nkosi Sikelel 'iAfrika ( God, bless Africa ) composed in 1897 by the South African Enoch Mankayi Sontonga , which also forms the national anthem of Zambia and a component of the South African national anthem . The text in the official language Swahili is based on the original written by Sontonga.

The hymn was already used in an almost identical version by the Republic of Tanganyika , but in the second stanza reference was made to the then country name Tanganyika . After the union with Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanzania on April 26, 1964, the current version of the text came into force.
