Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oh Uganda, Land of Beauty is the national anthem of Uganda . It was introduced on October 9, 1962, on the day the country gained independence. Text and music are by George Wilberforce Kakoma and Peter Wingard .

Shortly before independence, three committees were set up to determine the country's national symbols. The chairman of the committee to determine the national anthem was Senteza Kajubi . A nationwide campaign was started to collect suggestions for a new composition.

The composition should be rewritten, solemn and with a view to the future, and it should be harmonious in all voices .

In July 1963, the composition Kakomas was selected, which, according to Kakomas, should have been composed in a single night shortly before the closing date.

Text in Swahili

Ewe Uganda Mungu akutunze
Tunaweka kesho yetu mkononi mwako.
Pamoja kama watu huru
Kwa ajili ya uhuru
Tutashikamana daima.
Ewe Uganda, nchi ya uhuru
Tunakutolea upendo na kazi.
Pamoja na majirani wetu
kwa wito wa nchi yetu
twaishi kwa amani na undugu.
Ewe Uganda, nchi inayotulisha
kwa jua na ardhi yenye rutba.
Kwa ajili ya nchi yetu
tutasimama daima
Wewe ni lulu ya taji la Africa.

In English

||:

Oh, Uganda!: || may God uphold thee,
We lay our future in thy hand;
United, free for liberty
together we'll always stand.

Oh Uganda! the land of freedom,
Our love and labor we give;
And with neighbors all
At our country's call
In peace and friendship we'll live.

Oh Uganda! the land that feeds us,
By sun and fertile soil grown;
For our own dear land,
We'll always stand,
The Pearl of Africa's Crown.
