Lesotho Fatse La Bontata Rona

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lesōthō fatše la bo ntat'a rōna is the national anthem of the Kingdom of Lesotho . The text was written in Sesotho in the 1860s by François Coillard , a French missionary from the Société des missions évangéliques de Paris who lived with the Basotho . The melody was published in 1820 in a song book by the Baden-Swiss composer Ferdinand Samuel Laur in two parts for school practice purposes; Coillard had found the melody in a songbook. The L'amour de la patrie listed there was called Freiheit in the German version and was the setting of a text by Friedrich Schlegel . The popular song had been reprinted over and over for years.

The piece became the national anthem in 1967 - shortly after Lesotho gained independence. However, three stanzas were omitted because Coillard wanted to dissuade the Basotho from traditional customs.
