Jwaneng is a town within the Southern District in Botswana . There is an important diamond mine there .

In 2011 Jwaneng had 18,008 residents. The city lies within the Southern District, but is self-governing.

Jwaneng consists of eight roughly equal parts of the city (units) , of which Unit 8 is the youngest. The mine and spoil dumps are about three kilometers north of the city.

Jwaneng is located on the southeastern edge of the Kalahari , about 110 kilometers from the capital Gaborone . The area is flat and the climate is arid .

history

In the area in 1972 three were diamond bearing kimberlite - Dykes in paläoproterozoischem sedimentary rock discovered; In 1982 the Jwaneng Diamond Mine went into full operation. At the same time, the city came into being. Jwaneng means "place of small stones" in Setswana . At first, Jwaneng was a “closed city” that strangers were not allowed to enter; today the city is generally accessible.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Jwaneng Diamond Mine is the eighth largest diamond mine in the world, belongs to the Debswana Group and is an open pit mine . Every year 12 to 15 million carats (Kt) are mined. One ton of rock contains an average of 1.26 ct of diamonds. The reserves amount to 88.3 MKt (as of December 2012). At times, the mine revenues accounted for 70 percent of the Debswana total profits. In 2012 the mine was 300 meters deep; a depth of 675 meters is expected by the time the mine is closed.

The Jwaneng Airport ( IATA code JWA, ICAO code FBJW ) is operated by Debswana-owned aircraft. It is located immediately west of the city. The asphalt runway is around 1675 meters long. Jwaneng is the Trans-Kalahari Corridor , the Botswana as A2 is called and Kanye and South Africa in the east with Kang and Namibia joins the west. The Jwaneng Bus Terminal is located on the A2 on the northern edge of the city .

In Jwana Game Park , there are many animals to see.
