Orapa is a town in Central District in Botswana . There is an important diamond mine there .

geography

In 2011 Orapa had 9,544 inhabitants. The place is fenced all around to keep thieves away from the mines. The city and the mine can only be reached by passing through the entrance gates in the east or west. The districts each have uniform houses. Orapa is the administrative seat of the Orapa Sub-District.

Orapa is located on the northern edge of the Kalahari . Letlhakane is around 15 kilometers south-east and has a population of over 20,000. The Mopipi Dam west of the city is occasionally fed by the Boteti and is used to supply water in the arid area. Orapa is south of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and around 230 kilometers west of Francistown .

history

With an area of ​​112 hectares, the Orapa Diamond Mine of the Debswana Group is the world's largest open-cast diamond mine . The mine is north of the city and the spoil heaps are to the east. With the Letlhakane Diamond Mine and the Damtshaa Diamond Mine , two other diamond mines in Debswana are less than 30 kilometers away. All three mines are managed from Orapa. In 2011, the three mines produced 12.25 million carats , while the Orapa mine produced 14.95 million carats in 2005 alone.

The Orapa Airport ( IATA code ORP, ICAO code FBOR ) is operated by Debswana-owned aircraft. The asphalt runway is 1675 meters long. There is a bus station in the village. Road connections exist to the east towards Francistown (A30), to the west towards Rakops and via Letlhakane to Serowe in the southeast (A14). A bypass road runs south of the fence around Orapa.

The local hospital has 65 beds and also serves the residents of the surrounding Boteti sub-district. Orapa United FC football club plays in the Botswana Premier League . The Itekeng Stadium has 5000 seats and is located in the city center. The zoo Orapa Game Park is located northwest of the city on a wetland.
