Letlhakane is a place in the Central District in Botswana . There is a diamond mine to the southeast .

In 2011 Letlhakane had 20,481 residents.

Letlhakane is located in the northeast of the flat, arid Kalahari and stretches along a mostly dry river bed. Orapa is around 15 kilometers to the northwest . The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are to the north and the city of Francistown is around 220 kilometers to the east .

history

1967 diamond-bearing were in the field kimberlite - Dykes discovered; In 1975 the Letlhakane Diamond Mine was established. The Setswana word Letlhakane means something like "small reeds".

Economy and Infrastructure

The Letlhakane Diamond Mine is an open pit mine and, like other surrounding diamond mines, belongs to the Debswana Group. The mine is about eleven kilometers southeast of Letlhakanes. With the Orapa Diamond Mine and the Damtshaa Diamond Mine , two other diamond mines in Debswana are less than 30 kilometers away. All three mines are managed from Orapa. In 2011, the three mines produced 12.25 million carats . In 2006, the Letlhakane Diamond Mine produced around 1.089 million carats. The Letlhakane Uranium Project is a planned mining of uranium (V, VI) oxide in an area between Letlhakane and Francistown.

Road connections exist on the A14 to the northwest in the direction of Orapa and to Serowe in the southeast.

There is a prison to the east of the village.
