Mahalapye is a city in the Central District in Botswana .

geography

In 2011 Mahalapye had 43,289 inhabitants. The Mhalatswe, a left tributary of the Limpopo , flows through Mahalapye.

Mahalapye is located in the east of the country between the two largest cities of Botswana, Gaborone (about 160 kilometers away) and Francistown (220 kilometers). About 70 kilometers to the northeast is Palapye . About 20 kilometers to the west is the former main town of Bangwato , Shoshong .

The average temperature is 20.4 ° C, the annual rainfall is 452 millimeters.

history

Mahalapye was built as a station on the Gaborone – Francistown railway line. In 1922 it consisted of three settlements ( wards ), in 1946 it had 2,453 inhabitants. The name, like the name of the northern city of Palapye, refers to the Impala antelope.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main occupations are agriculture with cattle breeding and the cultivation of millet, corn and beans as well as small industrial companies.

Mahalapye is on the A1 trunk road . Shoshong to the west is connected to Mahalapye by a back road. Another road leads to the Parr’s Halt / Stockpoort border crossing and turns into the R510 towards Lephalale in South Africa . Mahalapye is located on Botswana's only long-distance railway line (see Rail Transport in Botswana ). It is used in freight transport as well as by passenger trains and special trains such as the Pride of Africa .

In Mahalapye there is the Mahalapye Prison. A monument near the city shows the location of the Tropic of Capricorn .
