Lephalale (formerly Ellisras ) in the municipality of Lephalale , District Waterberg is a city in the South African province of Limpopo . In 2011 it had 17,639 inhabitants. It is located in the Waterberg Mountains .
The river Lephalale , which flows through the urban area , gave it its name. The town, which was founded in 1960 as Ellisras, after the former owners of the local farms Patrick Ellis and Piet Erasmus, is known primarily for its extensive coal deposits and their mining. The largest dry- cooled coal-fired power plant in the world, the Matimba power plant (6 × 800 MW), is also located in Lephalale. The partially completed Medupi Power Station should have a capacity of up to 4,500 megawatts in the final state.
Another important industry is tourism . About 105,000 people live in the municipality of Lephalale.
The more than 900 kilometers long Regional Route 33 (R33) begins in Lephalale .
