The South East District (formerly South-East District ; German: "Southeast District") is a district of Botswana . With an area of 1780 km² and 345,613 inhabitants, it is the smallest district in the country in terms of area and the second largest in terms of population. Larger places are Botswana's capital Gaborone , Lobatse , Tlokweng and the district capital Ramotswa .
The cities of Gaborone and Lobatse form their own administrative units ( City Council and Town Council ).
The district borders clockwise, starting in the north, with the district Kgatleng , the South African province northwest and the districts Southern and Kweneng .
The A1 trunk road and the only international railway line in Botswana run through the district, see Rail Transport in Botswana .
