Selebi-Phikwe is a mining town in northeast Botswana . With 49,411 inhabitants (2011 census) it is the seventh largest city in the country. The city is located in the Central District but is self-governing.
The city emerged from the two villages of Selebi and Phikwe, 14 kilometers apart, between which a copper and nickel deposit , discovered in 1967, extends. The mine, the first settlements and finally the town of Selebi-Phikwe were built on the farmland between the two villages. The mine is operated by the country's largest private employer, the mining company Bamangwato Concessions Ltd. (BCL).
The Selebi-Phikwe coal-fired power plant was the second largest power plant in Botswana with an output of 60 MW , but was shut down in the 2000s.
Selebi Phikwe Airport is close to the city .
