Moka (IPA: moka ) is a place in the Moka district of the same name in Mauritius on the border with the Plaines Wilhems district . The village is administered by the Moka Village Council under the supervision of the Moka District Council . According to a census by Statistics Mauritius 2011, the place had 8,846 inhabitants.

geography

The altitude mark of the place is at 203  m , districts rise up to 425  m . Moka is about 2 km south of Port Louis as the crow flies , but the place is quite remote, as it is clearly separated from the city by the Moka Range . The mountain Le Pouce ("The Thumb") is nearby and barely 500 m to the east is the town of Beau-Bassin Rose-Hill , which is also separated by a mountain ridge. Réduit is a suburb in which Le Château de Réduit (the residence of the President) and the University of Mauritius (Université de Maurice) are located. The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute are also located in the local area.

history

Moka is centrally located in Mauritius and has seen a building boom in recent years. This is due, among other things, to the establishment of “CyberCity” two km away ( Ebène City ). In addition, a collapse in sugar prices caused sugar plantations to switch to real estate investments. The European Union and the World Trade Organization were not ready to offer Mauritius better prices for sugar. Between 2004 and 2006, five residential areas were built in Moka.
