African Athletics Championships 2000

The 12th African Athletics Championships took place from August 12th to 15th, 2000 in Stade 5 Juillet 1962 in the Algerian capital, Algiers .

Competitions were held in 22 disciplines for men and 21 disciplines for women. For the men’s 3000 meter obstacle course , there was no corresponding competition for women. Compared to the previous African Championships , a 10-km road race replaced the 5,000-meter walking distance for women , and they were allowed to do the pole vault for the first time . For men and women, the 10,000-meter run was reintroduced into the program and the 3,000-meter run was canceled.

With 411 athletes from 43 countries, a new record of participants was set for the African Championships. Seven athletes managed to defend their title in their discipline in Algiers: Glory Alozie ( NGR , 100-meter hurdles ), Caroline Fournier ( MRI , hammer throw ), Hatem Ghoula ( TUN , 20 km walking ), Abderrahmane Hammad (ALG, high jump ), Andrew Owusu ( GHA , triple jump ) Baya Rahouli (ALG, triple jump) and Rédouane Youcef (ALG, decathlon ). The most successful athletes with two gold medals each were the Ghanaian Abdul Aziz Zakari and the Cameroonian Myriam Léonie Mani , who both won their races over 100 m and 200 m .
