Fatima Yusuf

Fatima Yusuf (born May 2, 1971 in Owo , Nigeria ) is a former Nigerian athlete . She won Olympic silver in 1996 with the 4 x 400 meter relay .

Career

At the African Championships in 1989, she won silver in the 400-meter run and gold in the 4-by-400-meter relay. In January 1990 she set her first African record in the 400-meter run with 51.08 seconds and won the final at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland with this time . With the 4 x 100 meter relay with the line-up Beatrice Utondu , Fatima Yusuf, Charity Opara and Chioma Ajunwa , she finished third behind the Australian and English relays in 44.67 seconds. At the Junior World Championships in 1990, she won the 400-meter run. At the African Championships, she achieved four successes, she won over 200 meters and over 400 meters and with both relays. In 1991 she won gold over 400 meters at the Africa Games and with the 4 x 400 meter relay as well as silver over 200 meters. At the 1991 World Championships , she finished fifth with the relay.

After two weaker years, Fatima Yusuf returned in 1994, she won silver at the Commonwealth Games in 50.53 seconds behind the Australian Cathy Freeman and also finished second in the World Cup . In 1995 she won the African Games both over 400 meters and with the relay, at the 1995 World Championships in Gothenburg she was fifth in 50.70 seconds. On September 15, 1995, she set her personal best and her fourth African record at the height of Harare with 49.43 seconds.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, she finished sixth over 400 meters in 49.77 seconds. With the season in the line-up of Olabisi Afolabi , Fatima Yusuf, Charity Opara and Falilat Ogunkoya , she ran in 3: 21.04 minutes to the silver medal behind the Americans, the time is the existing African record (as of December 23, 2008). In 1987 Fatima Yusuf finished seventh with the Nigerian relay at the world championships . She was sixth in 22.42 seconds over 200 meters at the 1999 World Championships after improving her best time to 22.28 seconds in the quarterfinals. Three weeks after the World Championships, she won the 200-meter run at the African Games in 22.45 seconds.

With a height of 1.80 m, she had a competition weight of 64 kg. She graduated from Azusa Pacific University .
