Owo is a city in the Nigerian state of Ondo and is located in the southwest of Nigeria. According to a calculation from 2012, it has 166,357 inhabitants.
Owo is an agricultural center between Benin City and Ile-Ife . In the city are yams , cassava , corn , okra , pepper , cocoa and cotton traded. Between 1400 and 1600 Owo was the center of a Yoruba state. Excavations, led by Ekpo Eyo from 1969 to 1971, unearthed 15th century terracotta sculptures that testify to the influence of the cultural traditions of Benin City and Ile-Ife.
Owo and its surroundings form one of the 18 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Ondo with an area of 1026.83 km². In the penultimate census in 1991, the LGA had 157,181 inhabitants and thus a population density of 153 inhabitants per km².
