Nawal El Moutawakel ( Arabic نوال المتوكل, DMG Nawāl al-Mutawakkil , also Nawal El Moutawakil ; * April 15, 1962 in Casablanca ) is a former Moroccan track and field athlete and Olympic champion who is currently a politician .

Life

El Moutawakel became the first African and first Muslim woman to win a gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . The Iowa State University student , completely surprisingly, won the 400-meter hurdles , which was included in the Olympic program for the first time . The Moroccan King Hassan II declared that all girls of his country who were born on the day of the victory of El Moutawakel should bear their names in her honor.

In 1993 she started the Course Féminine de Casablanca , which is now one of the largest women's sports events in the world with around 30,000 participants. In 1995 she became a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and has been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1998 . In 2002 she founded the NGO Association Marocaine Sport & Développement. From 1997 to 1998 she was State Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sport in her country, and in October 2007 she was appointed head of this ministry.

With a height of 1.62 m, El Moutawakel had a competition weight of 50 kg. She is married and has two children.
