Wenda Nel (born Theron; born July 30, 1988 in Worcester ) is a South African hurdler who specializes in the 400 meter distance . At the beginning of her career, she also competed in sprinting at international championships.

Athletic career

Wenda Nel gained her first international experience at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Marrakech , where she was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 200-meter run with 24.33 seconds . The following year, she was eliminated from the Junior World Championships in Beijing over 100 and 200 meters and with the South African 4 x 100 meter relay in the first round. In 2007 she was at the Junior African Championships in Ouagadougou in 15.73 s eighth in the 100-meter hurdles . In 2009 she took part in the Summer Universiade in Belgrade , where she was eliminated in the first round of the 400-meter hurdles in 57.89 s. In 2010 she finished seventh in 57.70 s at the African Championships in Nairobi . In 2016 she successfully defended her title at the African Championships in Durban, Germany, in 54.86 seconds and also won the South African relay in 3: 28.49 minutes. She then took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and was eliminated there with 55.83 s in the semifinals . Also at the World Championships in London the following year, she was eliminated in the semifinals with 55.70 seconds , while she did not qualify for the final with the South African team in 3: 37.82 minutes . In 2018 she again took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast and won the bronze medal there in 54.96 s behind the Jamaican Janieve Russell and Eilidh Doyle from Scotland. In August she also won bronze at the African Championships in Asaba in 57.04 seconds behind the Nigerian Glory Onome Nathaniel and Lamiae Lhabze from Morocco. After Nathaniel was disqualified for a doping violation, Nel received the silver medal. Then she was at the Athletics Continental Cup in Ostrava in 56.54 s sixth.

In 2019, Nel took sixth place at the Africa Games in Rabat in 58.01 s and was fifth in the relay in 3: 41.17 min.

Nel was South African champion in the 400-meter hurdles every year from 2010 to 2012 and from 2014 to 2018, and also with the 4-by-400-meter relay from 2011 to 2013 and 2015 and 2016. She has been married to triathlete Jacques Nel since 2012 .
