Junior World Championships 2004 Junior World Championships 2008

The 11th Junior World Athletics Championships took place from August 15 to 20, 2006 at the Chaoyang Sports Center in the Chinese capital Beijing . They are the worldwide competitions of the best athletes under 20 years of age.

Participation was a new record, 1451 athletes (from 180 nations) took part in the 44 competitions (22 each for men and women), with 69 nations reaching the finals and 44 nations winning medals, 21 countries sharing the victories.

The German team of the DLV included 68 athletes and the U20 / U23 national coach Dietmar Chounard . Two athletes competed for Austria and the Swiss Athletics Federation sent eight athletes to Beijing, under the direction of Patrick Buchs .

The organization of the World Junior Athletics Championships in 2006 was also considered by the organizers as a test for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where the sports center also served as a venue. The athletes had problems with the combination of high air temperatures (30–35 ° C), high humidity (between 80 and 90 percent) and high levels of smog . Noticeably many teams had problems with stomach and intestinal diseases and colds. As a result, many athletes were weakened, unable to work or at least less productive.

The second placed Hugo Chila went into the competition as the best of the year (16.55 m) and in the final he had by far the best series of jumps: three jumps of 16.40 m and further. However, the French Benjamin Compaoré outgrew himself. After he had already set his personal best in the qualification with 16.34 m, he jumped in his third jump in the final to a new world best of the year and improved his best by 27 cm. The Ecuadorian Chila couldn't counter that. The German participant Nico Bayer was able to improve his personal best in the qualification by 5 cm (to 15.69 m) and thus reached the final of the best 12. The final of the best eight could not be reached for him, especially since he only had one valid (15.43 m, with 1.3 m / s headwind) from three attempts.

Prior to the competition, the second-placed Chinese woman was the world's best of the year with a height of 1.92 m. However, she was unable to confirm this level at the World Championships. In a very close competition, the Uzbekin Radzivil was the only one who jumped over 1.91 m (in the second attempt) and at the same time set a new junior national record. The 19-year-old German Annett Engel placed third together with the Kazakh Jewsejewa. Both had the same series of jumps - Engel just barely tore the third attempt over 1.88 m. For the German it was the second international medal after she won silver at the U18 World Cup three years ago.

In the qualification, the Portuguese Marisa Anselmo set a new junior national record with a jump of 1.81 m, which was not enough for the final.

Astonishing in this competition was the third place of the 15-year-old Australian Vicky Parnov and the junior national record of the second-placed Slovenian. The 16-year-old Waleria Wolik, who set a new youth world record (4.40 m) on July 8, 2006, could not confirm this form again. One of two Austrians at these World Championships was Daniela Höllwarth, who delivered a solid performance with 3.80 m, but did not make it to the final and came in 19th overall.

The Danish Iben Høgh-Pedersen set a new Danish junior national record with 3.80 m, but could not reach the final.

Rhonda Watkins, from Trinidad and Tobago, entered the competition as the world's best junior woman of the year. After she had won the qualification two days earlier (6.47 m), she repeated a similar performance in the final and was the deserved winner. The German starter Anika Leipold was sick five days earlier, started the qualification weak and qualified in ninth place. In the final, she was fifth before the last jump, but then managed to improve again and landed an inch ahead of the Chinese in second place.
