Martin Wierig (born June 10, 1987 in Beckendorf-Neindorf , Oschersleben district , GDR ) is a German discus thrower .

Since 2006 he has been a member of the Kienbaum Federal Police Sports School , the federal police’s top-level sports sponsoring facility for summer and year-round sports.

Life

Wierig grew up in Seehausen and attended the sports high school in Magdeburg from the seventh grade onwards . After he had initially concentrated on the hurdles , his trainer Armin Lemme introduced him to the throwing area from 2000. Although he also achieved passable results in the shot put , the discus throw proved to be his strongest discipline over time.

With the discus, Wierig was eighth at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Athletics in Grosseto and won the bronze medal at the 2005 European Junior Championships in Kaunaus and the 2006 Junior World Championships in Beijing. He won the U23 European Championships 2007 in Debrecen and finished third at the U23 European Championships 2009 in Kaunaus.

At the European Championships 2010 in Barcelona Wierig finished seventh, at the World Championships 2011 in Daegu he missed the qualification as 19th in the final.

In 2012 Wierig won the Winter Throwing European Cup in Bar. In contrast, he missed the finals at the European Championships in Helsinki . Shortly before the Olympic Games in London, he increased his personal best to 68.33 m and thus occupied fourth place in the world's annual best list. In the title fights he was sixth with 65.85 m.

At the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Wierig took fourth place with a width of 65.02 m.

In 2017 he became German runner- up with a 64.29 m .

With a width of 65.39 m he became German champion in August 2019.
