There was an exciting race in wonderful weather. On the last kilometer, an eight-man leading group had pulled away. With 300 meters from the finish line, the 10,000 meter champion Simon Boch increased the pace again. Amanal Petros alone was able to keep up and even sprinted over Boch before the finish. Then there was almost a mishap and Petros would have run past the goal. But he noticed and corrected his mistake with a swerve and thus reversed the result of the 10,000 meter DM in Bautzen . For the next two runners, Philipp Pflieger and Hendrik Pfeiffer, the main thing was to gain confidence for the marathon championship in Frankfurt at the end of October , which they did very well.

However, Robert Harting is a few meters short of his top level of previous years.

He also defeated the world's best of the year and Olympic gold medalist Thomas Röhler, who showed strong nerves after initial difficulties and was able to finish second. After a two-month break from competitions and two operations to remove an abscess on her buttocks, it was amazing how strong Sabrina Mockenhaupt was. Mockenhaupt broke away from a top trio that still had 1500 meters to go and won the race by three seconds over Anna Hahner, who completed her first major race here after the marathon at the 2016 Olympic Games . She also had a long break from injury after a torn tendon and was very satisfied with her result with regard to the marathon championship in Frankfurt at the end of October . Third-placed Corinna Harrer showed rising form again and with Franziska Reng in fourth there was another runner who made a good comeback after injury problems. For Sabrina Mockenhaupt it was the 45th German championship title.
