The 98th German Athletics Championships were held between July 3rd and 5th, 1998 in Berlin in the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark .
Dieter Baumann once again set his course with excellent performances. He won all three courses from 1500 m to 10,000 m and achieved the championship record over the 10,000 m of 27: 53.59 minutes , which is still valid today (January 2016) . Over the 5000 m he clearly defeated his strongest opponent Stéphane Franke . The two - by no means always very friendly with each other - then won silver and bronze over the 10,000 m at the European Championships in August . The pole vault competition, in which Tim Lobinger jumped 5.92 m and Danny Ecker 5.80 m, also had a high level at the top . Tanja Damaske achieved the best performance ever at the championships with her 70.10 m in the javelin throw . Steffi Nerius was second with her 67.32 m for a world class level in this discipline.
There has been a change in the length of the women's walk . At the main location of the championship program - in 1998 in Berlin - the women went 10,000 m instead of 5000 m. In addition, the longer walking competitions for women and men took place at another location . The men walked 50 km as usual, the women now 20 km instead of 10 km. The distance of 20 km also prevailed internationally in the women's walking competition program .
There was a special feature in the women's 100 km road race . The 35-year-old Constanze Wagner , who actually won the race with 7:32:17 hours, was only counted as the winner in her age group because she had not been registered as a participant in the main class. Tanja Schäfer is still on the official list of winners today .
As usual, further disciplines took place in other locations, named in the following list in chronological order.
- Half marathon - Potsdam , March 28th with individual / team ratings for women and men
