The 46th German Athletics Championships were the first athletics championships after the Second World War . The greater part of the competitions took place on August 24th and 25th, 1946 in Frankfurt's Waldstadion . With a few exceptions, all competitions were held in Frankfurt as part of the event . It was astonishing that, given the circumstances around, an athletics event could be held so shortly after the end of the war. But obviously culture , art , music and also sport were so important to people that things like this were being realized everywhere. That was the case in Germany and in all the other countries that were massively affected by the war .
Compared to the competition program of the pre-war period, there were still some restrictions due to the conditions so shortly after the end of the Second World War. The men lacked the following disciplines:
The marathon was run over a distance of 20 km, so it was shorter than today's half marathon . The longest walking distance was carried out over 25 km. The 200 meters were missing from the already very limited women's offer . With the 100 meters , the 80 meter hurdles and the 4 x 100 meter relay, there were only three running routes.
As in previous years, some other championship titles were not awarded at the main venue. This year these competitions took place in Braunschweig on September 29th:
Marathon over 20 km - individual and team classification
Pentathlon (men and women) - each individual valuation
The following overviews summarize the medal winners. A more detailed overview with the first six in each of the individual disciplines can be found under the link German Athletics Championships 1946 / Results .
