The 121st German Athletics Championships took place on June 5th and 6th, 2021 in Braunschweig's Eintrachtstadion and were held as part of the 2021 finals . The women's pole vault competition was held on June 4th.
Originally the championships were supposed to take place in the Kassel Auestadion . The Presidium of the German Athletics Association (DLV) unanimously decided on this venue in August 2019. After the COVID-19 -related postponement of the 2020 championships, which also took place without spectators, it was decided in July 2020 to allow the 2021 German championships to also take place in Braunschweig. In return, Kassel was awarded the contract to host the championships in 2023, as the documenta will take place in Kassel in 2022 .
Due to the still rampant COVID-19 pandemic, there were various restrictions. The number of participating athletes was reduced and there were no relay races. The number of viewers was also limited to 2000. For various reasons, many of the top German athletes did not take part. This, as well as the training deficits caused by the pandemic and the rainy and cool weather, led to an overall rather moderate level of the event.
