The 42nd German Athletics Championships took place on August 10 and 11, 1940, as in the previous year and the three following years in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Sports events were held in Germany in the first years of World War II as unrestrictedly as possible, including these German Athletics Championships in 1940.

Some competitions did not take place as part of this event:

These were the first athletics championships during World War II , but three more followed. After the conquest of France , the National Socialists were at the height of their power. The civilian population in the German Reich was relatively little affected by the events of the war, especially with a view to the coming years. However, this did not apply to the Jewish people , who were already suffering greatly from the conditions.

The following overview summarizes the medalists of all competitions in 1940.
