timeline
Berlin 2019 Braunschweig 2021

The 120th  German Athletics Championships should be held on June 6th and 7th, 2020 in the Braunschweig Eintracht Stadium . It was the earliest date of the German Athletics Championships in the course of the year that would have ever happened. This is why the necessary qualification standards could already be met in 2019.

For a long time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was unclear whether it would be possible to hold competitions at all in 2020. After great efforts by the organizer to create a concept in which the COVID-19 problem is adequately taken into account and the legal regulations are taken into account, the main event of the German championships could take place on August 8th and 9th. On the two days, 34 decisions with 477 athletes from all state associations and federal states were held. These numbers are hardly lower than in previous years.

The originally planned early event was due to the fact that there were two major international events in 2020: (1) the Olympic Games ( Tokyo , July 31 to August 9) and (2) the European Championships ( Paris , August 26 to 30 ). Also, because of the television broadcasts, they did not want the event to take place parallel to the European Football Championship (June 12 to July 12).

At the start of the competitions, the championship title in pole vault should already be awarded on Thursday, June 4th, but not in the stadium, but on a transportable facility in Braunschweig city center. Such an outsourcing had already existed at previous German championships for the shot put ( 2014 and 2018 ) and the long jump ( 2015 ). But in view of the COVID-19 problems, the outsourcing plans were abandoned, all competitions took place in the Braunschweig stadium.

The finals - Rhein-Ruhr 2020 , which should take place at the same time, have also been postponed.

The backlog of training caused by the pandemic, the postponement of dates and the cancellation of the international championships and numerous sports festivals made themselves felt: many performances were not at the level of previous years. Also, not all top athletes took part in the championships. To what extent the lack of spectators played a role remains questionable.

Outsourced competitions

For reasons of time and organization, some of the competitions are traditionally not held during the main event. For the first time there should be German relay championships in which, with the exception of the 4 x 100 meter relay, all relay competitions are held. It was planned to include some relay races in the competition program. However, like many others, this competition was canceled without replacement

The location and date for the following outsourced competitions have already been set (as of February 3, 2020) :
