Elena Burkard (born February 10, 1992 in Freudenstadt , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German athlete who specializes in obstacle and cross-country runs and also does medium-distance and long-distance runs .

career path

After high school with a grade point average of 1.3 on Richard von Weizsäcker Gymnasium in Baiersbronn , Burkart started in late summer 2012 with a scholarship a chemistry degree at the University of San Francisco (USF). She could not realize her desire to study food chemistry because this subject was not offered at the USF. Burkard had originally only planned to study abroad for a year, but then she no longer wanted to return to Germany, and finally the scholarship was no longer extended after five years. Since the University of Tübingen was the only university that she Program Master took up with her American Chemistry Bachelor for one, Burkard studied there chemistry to master .

Athletic career

Elena Burkard was also active in equestrian sports and summer biathlon in her youth . In 2009 she won bronze at the German championships in summer biathlon in Zinnwald with the 3 x 3 kilometer relay . She has dedicated herself to long-distance running since she was 17 .

In 2010, Burkard won bronze over 3000 m at the German Youth Championships in her first A youth year (U20) and came 21st in the U20 class at the European Cross Country Championships in Albufeira ( Portugal ) .

In 2011 she improved to 11th place in the individual competition at the European Cross Country Championships in Velenje ( Slovenia ) and won bronze in the U20 team classification.

In 2012 Burkard was runner-up with the German cross-country team in Ohrdruf and came 6th in the individual ranking. At the German Championships in Wattenscheid she came 8th in the 5000 meter run . In late summer, Burkard accepted an athletic scholarship from the University of San Francisco .

In 2014 Burkard took part in the German Cross Country Championships in Löningen and finished in 5th place. At the German Championships in Ulm , she won bronze over 5000 m.

In 2017 Burkard returned from San Francisco , where she studied until May. In the 1500 meter run she reached 4th place at the German Championships in Erfurt . In November Burkard came bronze in the traditionally top cross-country run in Tilburg ( Netherlands ) over the 8.3 km long route. In December, she finished 5th in the individual and 6th place with the team at the European Cross Country Championships in Šamorín ( Slovakia ).

In 2018, Burkard did not have an indoor season and went to a training camp in Italy over Easter because she wanted to focus on the 1,500-meter run . In March she won the championship title at the German Cross Country Championships in Ohrdruf . Burkard started the obstacle course in September 2017 and contested her first obstacle race at the 28th runners' meeting in Pliezhausen in May  , over 2000 m she finished 2nd in 6: 20.82 minutes. In her second obstacle course at the Meeting National in Montbéliard ( France ) Burkard won in 9: 36.93 min over 3000 m, with which she not only achieved the standard (9: 45.00 min) over this distance for the European Championships in Berlin , but also placed fourth on the European best list and first place on the German best list. At the Diamond League Meeting de Paris at the end of June, she again undercut the European Championship norm with 9:40.18 minutes and underlined her form at the beginning of July in Switzerland at the top athletics in Lucerne with a new personal best over 3000 m obstacle of 9:34, 51 min. In Nuremberg Burkard occurred while 1500 Meters and was with a personal best of 4: 06.51 min German Vice Champion . In Berlin she achieved 6th place at the European Championships with another personal best of 9: 29.76 min on the 3000 meter obstacle distance .

In 2019 she was able to defend her title at the German Cross Country Championships.

In 2020, Burkard, like other top athletes, did not take part in the German Cross Country Championships because of the late World Championships and the associated short season preparation as well as the concentration on the Olympic Games in Tokyo . During the subsequent outdoor season, which was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic , it started on June 26 at the Swiss Championships over 10,000m and in the steeple in Uster . In August 2020 Elena Burkard secured herself in 9: 50.31 min. the championship title over 3000 meters obstacle at the German Championships in Braunschweig .
