Location of the city of Löningen in the district of Cloppenburg | ||
The state-recognized resort town of Löningen is a town in the Oldenburger Münsterland , located in the triangle between Oldenburg , Osnabrück and the border with the Netherlands , more precisely in the southwestern district of Cloppenburg , about five kilometers from the border with the district of Emsland .
geography
Geographical location
Löningen is located in the Lower Saxony district of Cloppenburg between Oldenburg and Osnabrück on the edge of the Oldenburger Münsterland , embedded in the glacial valley of the Hase , between the Lastruper Geestrücken in the north and the Hahnenmoor in the south. The running route of the Hase between the confluence of the Lager Hase and the Löninger Mühlenbach is z. For example, between 1900 and the 1960s it was shortened from 16 kilometers to eleven kilometers, which means that the hare flows much faster than in 1900 and digs deeper and deeper into its bed. As a result of the river straightening, there are many oxbow lakes separated from the river in the area of the city of Löningen, e.g. B. the rabbit knee south of the city center. The section of the Hase between Löningen and Haselünne has not been straightened as much as the one above Löningen.
In Old Saxon times, Löningen was on Hansestrasse , the so-called Flemish Heerstrasse (today's Bundesstrasse 213), the center of the Hasegau .
Löningen borders in the southwest on the district of Emsland and in the southeast on the district of Osnabrück .

climate
There is a temperate maritime climate, influenced by wet north-westerly winds from the North Sea. On a long-term average, the air temperature in Löningen reaches 8.5 to 9.0 ° C and around 700 mm of precipitation falls. Between May and August, an average of 20 to 25 summer days (climatological term for days on which the maximum temperature exceeds 25 ° C) can be expected.
history
After Charlemagne (* probably April 2, 747 or 748; † January 28, 814 in Aachen) from 780 AD onwards nine mission districts for the Christianization of the subject Saxons were established, Abbot Gerbert Castus from the Visbek mission cell - the apostle of the Oldenburger Münsterland - the first parishes in the area founded. The Gaukirche Löningen was one of these in Hasegau .
Historically, it first appeared by name as Loingo in 822. The name Löningen was first mentioned in 1147 in a letter to the Bishop of Hildesheim . At that time the area of Löningen belonged to the Corvey monastery . From 1200 it was subordinate to the Count of Tecklenburg . The bishopric of Münster ruled the area from 1400.
At the time of the Reformation under Bishop Franz von Waldeck Löningen was dominated by Lutherans for around 70 years from 1543 to 1613. At that time, the Protestant reformer Hermann Bonnus worked in this region . In the course of the Counter Reformation under Bishop Ferdinand of Bavaria , the region was re-Catholicized.
In 1803 ecclesiastical rule ended and Löningen became part of the Duchy of Oldenburg . From 1811 to 1813 Löningen was part of the Quakenbrück arrondissement . After the Battle of Leipzig it fell back to Oldenburg.
Around 1790 the bottleneck through which the Große Hase had to squeeze between Löningen and Herzlake was relieved by the construction of the Hahnenmoorkanals , which increased the length of the distance that the water had to cover between the Hase overfall at Quakenbrück and Aselage near Herzlake 3 km shortened. As a result, the number and duration of flood events decreased. In 1903, the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg had the Kingdom of Prussia confirmed in a state treaty that the arms of the hase running through the town of Quakenbrück must be able to draw ten cubic meters of water per second. This was intended to guarantee that water from the Osnabrück region was not only discharged via the Großer Hase and thus Löningen, but also to a significant extent via the Hahnenmoorkanal.
In 1814 the Duchy of Oldenburg was divided into 25 offices. Löningen became one of them. This was dissolved in 1879 and assigned to the office of Cloppenburg . But Löningen still retained its district court.
In 1940, during the Second World War , the first bombs were dropped on the municipality of Löningen. In 1945 the district court was destroyed by bombs. British troops came to Löningen on April 10 and 11, 1945. After the place was enclosed on three sides, the German troops withdrew.
Löningen was granted city rights on March 1, 1982.
Five quarters and the Wiek
Originally the parish of Löningen consisted of four quarters. A quarter consists of several farmers. In the Middle Ages, Wachtum was part of the Lodberg district. In 1863 Wachtum was assigned to Hanover. Since 1974 Wachtum has belonged to Löningen again as the fifth quarter. Wiek describes the center of Löningen. The origin of the term is not clear. It appears in various spellings in connection with Löningen in documents from around 1400 onwards.
Incorporations
On March 1, 1974, the neighboring community Wachtum was incorporated.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In gold, a red bar with a damascus lattice."
According to the only seal of the village of Löningen known to him from the 17th century, Otto Hupp depicted a floating, faceted golden cross with broad ends in blue as the coat of arms and associated it with the cross of Meppen in terms of origin. In 1937, however, the governor of Oldenburg and Bremen awarded the municipality a seal with the above sign. In 1969 the President of the Oldenburg administrative district approved it as a coat of arms with colors. The shield was used as a farmer's seal as early as 1485 by a Burrichter from Löningen. Because of the rule of the bishops of Münster at that time, it undoubtedly refers to the bishopric's bar shield. There was a prince-bishop's hunting lodge on the Gelbrink in Löningen. The damascene in the old model is not a heraldic image, but at most a hint of color.
flag
The colors of the flag of the city of Löningen are yellow-red.
Town twinning
On June 17, 1990, the city of Wittenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Löningen signed a city partnership .
Culture and sights
Löningen is located in the Hasetal recreation area , named after the river Hase , which rises southeast of Osnabrück in Melle-Wellingholzhausen and flows into the Ems in Meppen . Several towns and municipalities in the course of the Hase belong to the Hasetal recreational area, including Quakenbrück , Essen (Oldenburg) , Herzlake and Haselünne .
The landmark of Löningen, the Catholic parish church of St. Vitus , is considered to be the largest pillar-less hall church in Germany. The Schutenmühle in Huckelrieden and the Alte Wassermühle Gut Duderstadt have been stops on the Lower Saxony Mühlenstraße since 2008 . On October 3rd, 2010 the plastic man with sheep by Peter Rüwe was ceremoniously unveiled in downtown Löningen .
From June 19 to September 18, 2013, the “Löninger Art Mile” was built on the Haseufer von Böen on the edge of the Löninger section of the Hase-Ems Tour , which consists of 29 artistically processed bicycles. The installations "Fish" and "Barrages" by Reinhart Dasenbrock in Haseknie form a permanent stop on the Hasetal Art Route.
In August 2009 the “Haseauen Adventure Path” was opened at Brockhöhe.

Despite its minor importance in daily passenger traffic, the platform is provided with grooved plate strips. After an accident on July 31, 2014 near Haselünne, in which a freight train severely damaged the track system, the route was closed to museum railway operations, but operations were resumed.
