Garrel is a municipality in the district of Cloppenburg in the Oldenburger Münsterland in Lower Saxony .

Geographical location

The municipality of Garrel is located 28 kilometers southwest of the city of Oldenburg and 13 kilometers north of the city of Cloppenburg . The Thülsfeld dam and the Wildeshauser Geest nature park are in the immediate vicinity . The area of ​​the community belongs to the Südoldenburger marshland. In the south-western area of ​​the municipality at the Thülsfelder dam you can also find the typical geest formations of the North German lowlands , consisting of heather areas, alternating with pine and spruce forests.

Temperate maritime climate influenced by humid northwest winds from the North Sea. In the long-term average, the air temperature in Garrel reaches 8.5 to 9.0 ° C and about 700 mm of precipitation falls. Between May and August, an average of 20 to 25 summer days (climatological term for days on which the maximum temperature exceeds 25 ° C) can be expected.

history

The first official records of the residents of Garrel can be found in a tax register from 1473 under the name "Gerdel". The first document about Garrel dates from 1479 in the Oldenburg document book. It is believed, however, that the origin dates back to pagan times and Garrel has a 1000-year history behind it.

Garrel has only existed as an independent political municipality since 1872. Before that, the place belonged to the municipality of Krapendorf in the Oldenburg district of Cloppenburg . The local area was part of the parish of Krapendorf since the Christianization .

Bernhard Eckholt ( NSDAP ) was Mayor of Garrel from 1938 to 1940 .

In 2000, Garrel hosted the 13th  European Shooting Festival , an event organized by the European Community of Historical Shooting .

Meteorite impact in Beverbruch

On September 10, 1930 at 2:15 p.m., a meteorite struck the Beverbruch district . It is part of the Oldenburg meteorite , which broke up about 4 km above the village of Döhlen into at least two main parts, which fell in Beverbruch and Bissel (municipality of Großenkneten ). The larger Beverbruch fragment with a weight of 11.73 kg is now in private hands, after the owner's daughter Konrad Meyer offered it for sale on permanent loan in the museum village of Cloppenburg in 1995 . The fragment "Bissel" has been missing since 2012.

The Catholic parish of St. Johannes Baptist was formed on October 24, 2004 by the Bishop of Münster, Reinhard Lettmann, from the parish of St. Peter and Paul Garrel and the three chapel parishes Beverbruch, Falkenberg and Nikolausdorf. The parish thus covers almost the entire area of ​​the political municipality, with the exception of the Varrelbusch district. The establishment of a new parish is one of the first examples of the merger of parishes in the official district of Vechta. St. Peter and Paul in Garrel remained as the parish church . Evangelical Lutheran Parish Garrel

In 1950 the "Friedenskirche" was built as a community center of the Bartning-Notkirchen- Type D. It was placed under monument protection. A steadily growing number of parishioners made it necessary to create new premises for the parish. As a result, the church was relocated within Garrels and connected to an entirely new community center. On December 13, 2009, the first service was celebrated at the new location.

The full-time mayor of the municipality of Garrel is Thomas Höffmann, who is supported as an independent candidate by the SPD, FDP and BfG and was elected as the new mayor on December 1, 2019 with 63.25%. Höffmann was able to prevail against three candidates. He succeeds Andreas Bartels, who resigned from his position in July 2019 after a vote of no confidence .

Companies in the food industry , agriculture and printing industry have settled in Garrel . The Heidemark Group is one of the largest German producers and marketers of poultry products and is based in Garrel, as is the animal feed producer Fleming + Wendeln . The Böseler Goldschmaus company, part of the Goldschmaus Group, is one of the largest pig slaughterhouses in Germany.

Garrel was the seat of a production facility of Lieken Brot- und Backwaren GmbH, which was closed at the end of 2018. Restructuring measures prompted the Lieken Group to take this step.

The headquarters of Lieken Brot- und Backwaren GmbH, including the data center and test bakery as part of Lieken AG, will remain in Garrel.

Garrel is located between the federal highway 72 and the federal highway 29 . The A1 motorway can be reached via the Cloppenburg entrance and exit as well as the Ahlhorner Heide motorway triangle . There used to be a rail connection to the Cloppenburg – Ocholt railway line , which is now only used by the Friesoyther Museum Railway and occasionally by private rail operators for transporting wood.
