Nikolausdorf is about 23 kilometers south of the city of Oldenburg (Oldb) and 16 kilometers north of the city of Cloppenburg . The Lethe (Hunte) Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area 012 ("Sager Meer, Ahlhorner Fischteiche, Lethetal") of the European Union and the Wildeshauser Geest Nature Park are in the immediate vicinity . The local area belongs to the South Oldenburg marshland.

Temperate maritime climate influenced by humid northwest winds from the North Sea. At the suggestion of clergyman Bernhard Kock, “Here trees shouldn't grow here, people should grow here!” (1899) and supported by Reinhold Glaß , the bog culture inspector and state economist , the establishment of the village in the Garreler Tertia was promoted. On April 2, 1900, the area was released for settlement. The first settler was Heinrich Deters from Düpe near Steinfeld in the spring of 1901. This year is therefore seen as the year the village was founded.
The establishment of the name "Nikolausdorf" took place in 1902 after the Oldenburg Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter (1827–1900).

Catholic Herz-Jesu Church
A chapel building association was founded in 1912 and the church was inaugurated on August 24, 1921. The high altar comes from the church in Goldenstedt and is a listed building. In 1949 the chapel community was converted into a parish rectorate.
Catholic parish of St. John Baptist
The Catholic parish of St. Johannes Baptist was formed on October 24, 2004 by the Bishop of Münster, Reinhard Lettmann, from the parish of St. Peter and Paul Garrel and the three chapel parishes Beverbruch, Falkenberg and Nikolausdorf. Every year, residents of the settlement in the Christmas post office in Nikolausdorf volunteer to answer letters addressed to (Saint) Nicholas in Nikolausdorf, 49681 Garrel.
