Wilhelm Wöste

Wilhelm Wöste (born October 3, 1911 in Löningen ; † September 15, 1993 in Münster ) was a Catholic theologian , auxiliary bishop in Münster , lobbyist and representative of socially oriented Catholicism.

Life

Wilhelm Wöste came from a farming family in Oldenburg. After graduating from high school in 1931 at the Clemens-August-Gymnasium in Cloppenburg , he studied theology in Münster and Freiburg. In Freiburg he became an active member of the Catholic student association Rheno-Palatia in the KV . On December 19, 1936, Wöste was ordained a priest in Münster Cathedral . As a Wehrmacht pastor and as a military and site pastor in Rennes (France), he led surrender negotiations with the Americans for the 416th Infantry Division to which he belonged.

From 1950 to 1969 Wöste was President of the KAB in Münster and Cologne.

From 1969 Wöste represented the interests of Catholicism in the federal government as head of the commissioner of the German bishops in Bonn , until he was on November 6, 1976 by Pope Paul VI. was appointed auxiliary bishop in Münster and titular bishop of Thignica . He was ordained bishop on January 9, 1977 by the Bishop of Münster Heinrich Tenhumberg ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops from Münster, Laurenz Böggering and Max Georg Freiherr von Twickel . In the German Bishops' Conference Wöste became chairman of the asylum working group and - even after his retirement  - campaigned for the integration of asylum seekers.

On December 20, 1986, Pope John Paul II accepted Wöstes' age-related resignation.
