Klemens Stadler

Josef Klemens Stadler (born February 23, 1908 in Munich ; † August 25, 1975 there ) was a German archivist and heraldist .

Stadler joined the Bavarian archives service in 1933. Following the state examination, he was appointed head of the heraldry department at the Bavarian Main State Archives in 1936 and later appointed chief archives director. He was editor of the Upper Bavarian Archive from 1949 to 1957.

He is the author of numerous publications on the municipal coat of arms and treatises on cultural history.

For his eight-volume work Deutsche Wappen / Federal Republic of Germany (Bremen 1964–1972), the author, senior archive director a. D. Dr. Klemens Stadler in Munich, as part of the 11th international congress for genealogy and heraldry in Liège 1972, the newly created “International Arvid Berghman Prize” was awarded. The office of the international academy for heraldry was responsible for the selection and evaluation of the work. The prize, named after the Swedish patron of heraldic science who died in 1962, is intended for a work on communal or civil coats of arms with supranational scientific significance. It consists of a silver plaque on which the award year, the name of the award winner and the title of the award-winning work as well as the coats of arms of the Academy and Arvid Berghmans are engraved. The foundation charter from 1971 was published in the Archivum Heraldicum . The award was presented in the Royal Library in Stockholm by the President of the Arvid Berghman Foundation.
