The Upper Bavarian Archive is a history magazine that appears annually and is published by the Historical Association of Upper Bavaria . In accordance with the purpose of the association, it contains contributions on state and regional historical research in the area of the administrative district of Upper Bavaria . One of the focal points is the history of the city of Munich, because the association is based at the Munich City Archives .

The magazine appeared for the first time two years after the association was founded with Volume 1 in 1839 and until 1958 (Volume 83) was entitled Upper Bavarian Archive for Patriotic History , since 1959 it has been published under the name that is still valid today. Volumes for two years have appeared several times, there were interruptions of at least five years from 1899 to 1903 and from 1942 to 1948. Including the 143rd volume from 2019, 1254 articles have so far appeared in the journal, which are taken into account in the complete directory. In terms of content, historical and art-historical topics are examined. The local and family history contributions, biographies, art historical presentations, legal historical treatises, source editions and find reports give an insight into the wide range of activities of the association and testify to the hard work of its members. The Upper Bavarian Archive is still the only scientific journal that is exclusively devoted to Upper Bavarian topics.
