Michael Schattenhofer

Michael Schattenhofer (born October 7, 1915 in Beilngries ; † January 30, 1992 in Munich ) was a German historian and archivist .

Live and act

Schattenhofer graduated from high school in Regensburg in 1935 . From 1937 he studied German and history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1944 he received his doctorate under Karl Alexander von Müller . From 1946 until his retirement, he worked at the Munich City Archives , initially as a research assistant and from 1951 as an archivist after taking the major archive examination . In 1958 he was appointed head of the city archives. In 1967 he became a member of the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . From 1947 he was a member of the Historic Association of Upper Bavaria and from 1960 to 1984 its chairman. From 1961 to 1982, 26 volumes of the club magazine Oberbayerisches Archiv were published under his editorship , whereby he shared this honorary position with Ludwig Morenz from 1965 to 1981. From 1966 to 1980 he headed the working group of Bavarian city archivists.

In 1976, Schattenhofer was awarded the Bavarian Poet Thaler . In 1985 the Historical Association for Upper Bavaria appointed him honorary chairman. In 1990 he received the “Bene merenti” medal from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He was also awarded the Munich Glow Medal .

He planned the expansion of the magazine area and the redesign of administration, user and exhibition rooms and brought it forward in the implementation. He gave the archive system important impulses. Schattenhofer published numerous books and articles on the history of the state capital Munich and the city of Beilngries . Together with Karl Bosl , he launched a series of dissertations on Bavarian state and Munich urban history; supported by editor Walter Grasser, almost 100 doctoral students were supported in fulfilling the printing requirement.
