The focus is on scientific research into the history of Upper Bavaria , strengthening historical awareness, disseminating historical knowledge and maintaining and further developing the historical heritage of the cultural landscape of Upper Bavaria. The main pillars of the work are lectures, guided tours and the publication of the association's magazine “ Oberbayerisches Archiv ”.

founding

The Historical Association of Upper Bavaria goes back to a cabinet order from King Ludwig I , with which he called for the establishment of historical associations in the circles of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1827 . The “Historical Association for the Isar Circle”, formed in Munich in June 1830, soon had 166 members, but had no real impact. The new political division of the administrative districts by tribal name made by King Ludwig I in November 1837 strengthened awareness of the regional intrinsic value. In Munich, the new national pride immediately had the desired effect: on December 11, 1837, twenty friends of history met to revitalize the association, elect a committee and discuss the future statutes. The association had its first seat in the Alte Akademie on Neuhauser Strasse. Since the "Society for German Antiquities of the Three Shields" , which had existed around Ludwig Schwanthaler since 1831, agreed to bring its members and collections into the newly founded "Historical Association of and for Upper Bavaria", at the end of 1838 there were already 273 members.

Enthusiasm was already started in the first year, in 1839 the first annual report and the first volume of the “Upper Bavarian Archive for Fatherland History” appeared - this series of publications still exists today.

Heinrich Konrad Föringer was a founding member and the hardest-working member of the association for the first four decades . From 1840 to 1878 he determined the structure, orientation and inventory of the association's library and from 1839 to 1878 he headed the editing of the Upper Bavarian Archives .
