Josef Würdinger (born May 20, 1822 in Munich ; † November 25, 1889 there ) was a Bavarian lieutenant colonel , military historian and the first director of the Bavarian Army Museum .

Life

Würdinger was born the son of a city court director. He spent his youth in Regensburg , attended grammar school in Amberg and the (today) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , which he graduated in 1839. After the death of his parents, he studied law and forest science at the University of Munich from 1839 . For economic reasons, Würdinger joined the 1st Jäger Battalion of the Bavarian Army as a cadet on February 7, 1843 , but continued his studies. On an inspection trip from Luitpold of Bavaria , he was assigned to the prince as a corporal sergeant and aroused his interest. In April 1847 he was transferred to the 4th Jäger Battalion and a year later he was appointed lieutenant . In 1848/49 Würdinger was in Franconia , Donauwörth during the revolutionary unrest and came from the Allgäu to Lindau . In Bregenz he became aware of Austrian military medical companies and reported about them. When similar formations were set up in Bavaria, he was transferred to the 1st Medical Company in Munich at the beginning of November 1850. In this position, Würdinger was promoted to first lieutenant in mid-April 1853 and, in addition to his service, devoted himself to a scientific activity. He published the Bavarian Military Almanac in four volumes , wrote the biographies of Gottfried Heinrich Graf von Pappenheim, Field Marshal General and Johann Freiherr von Werth, Imperial and Bavarian General of the Cavalry in 1858, and Johann Tzerklas Graf von Tilly, Bavarian military leader in 1859 . This led him to a scholarly circle in Munich and prompted King Maximilian II Joseph to appoint him to a commission under Lieutenant Karl von Spruner , which had to deal with Bavarian war history. Würdinger edited Volume II for the period from 1347 to 1506.

After Würdinger was promoted to Captain II class in the 3rd Infantry Regiment in early November 1861 , he was appointed a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1864. In May 1866 he was promoted to captain 1st class and in the same year took part in the war against Prussia as commandant of the 2nd field hospital . Commended for his work, he returned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment after the peace agreement. In 1868 the two-volume work War History of Bavaria, Franconia, Palatinate and Swabia was published , to which Würdinger had contributed the first volume and which earned him multiple recognition.

During the mobilization in 1870 on the occasion of the war against France , Würdinger was initially active as a battalion leader of the Landwehr in Neu-Ulm , until on August 30, 1870, he took over the leadership of III. Battalion in the 3rd Infantry Regiment off Longjumeau took over. He subsequently took part in the fighting at Artenay , Orléans , Coulmiers and Beaugency . During the storm and the capture of Le Mée-sur-Seine , Würdinger fell so unhappily on December 8, 1870 that he had to surrender his command. On December 16, 1870, he was promoted to major in the 2nd Infantry Regiment , commended by army orders and awarded the Knight's Cross, 2nd Class of the Military Merit Order, and the Iron Cross, 2nd Class. Since Würdinger was no longer field a usable due to his injury, he had on 13 October 1873 as a disabled veteran with board his farewell take.

After his departure, Würdinger devoted himself entirely to his scientific work. He continued to publish, was made a full member of the Academy of Sciences in 1878 and was curator of the antiquities collection of the Historical Society . For a short time he represented the Kingdom of Bavaria as the successor to Baron Hans von und zu Aufseß on the board of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings . He played a decisive role in the establishment of the Bavarian Army Museum and was its first director from 1880 to 1885. In this capacity, he was in 1881 the character as a lieutenant colonel awarded and nominated Würdinger 1888 an honorary member of the Bavarian Veterans' Association. In recognition of his services, Prince Regent Luitpold awarded him the golden Ludwig medal for science and art in 1888 in the same year . From 1886 to 1888 he was chairman of the Historical Association of Upper Bavaria .
