A prince regent conducts government affairs on behalf of a prince who is no longer or not yet able to do this himself (due to absence, minority, mental illness or other underage). Regent was usually the after Primogeniturordnung who is next capable of governing Agnat , say for example the crown prince if he was of age. For underage kings, their uncles often ruled.

The prince regent for an elector was called the spa administrator .

Prince regents known through their long term of office were, for example:

• Duke Philip of Orléans in the Kingdom of France: 1715–1723 for the still underage King Louis XV. (the era of the Regency )
• Prince George in the United Kingdom: 1811–1820 for King George III, who was probably suffering from porphyria . (the era of the Regency ); after his death in 1820 he became king himself as George IV.
• Prince Wilhelm of Prussia in the Kingdom of Prussia : from October 7, 1858 to January 2, 1861 for the sick King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia , in order to become his successor as king after the death of his brother
• Prince Luitpold in the Kingdom of Bavaria : from June 10, 1886 to December 12, 1912, first for the incapacitated King Ludwig II , then for the mentally ill King Otto (the "Prince Regent period")
• Prince Ludwig in the Kingdom of Bavaria: from December 13, 1912 to November 4, 1913 for King Otto . After a constitutional amendment , he himself became King of Bavaria on November 5, 1913.
• Prince Albrecht of Prussia in the Duchy of Braunschweig : from November 2, 1885 at the request of Prussia and after a resolution of the Federal Council in place of the last Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Hanover, Ernst August (II.) Of Hanover , until his death on September 13 1906
