Heinrich Konrad Föringer

Heinrich Konrad Föringer (born August 14, 1802 in Munich ; † February 9, 1880 there ) was a German librarian and archivist .

Life

After high school graduation exam in 1822 at the (present) Wilhelm Gymnasium München studied Föringer 1823 in Landshut and Würzburg jurisprudence . In Landshut he became a member of the Corps Isaria . In 1826 he passed the legal exam with distinction, followed by the successful state examination in 1827. He learned and understood ten foreign languages.

Föringer was married to Therese geb. von Schab and had nine children with her.

Föringer took up his actual inclinations - philosophy, art, literature and history - on January 28, 1828 a job in the court library in Munich . Until 1839 he was promoted to the fourth curator of the court and state library. In 1842/43 he organized the relocation of this library to the new building in Ludwigstrasse with flying colors. In 1855 he was appointed librarian and in 1867 senior librarian. The culmination of his career - the appointment as director - was denied to him when he was appointed to the management in 1856. At the age of 75, he retired on January 6, 1878 and received the honorary title of "Hofrat".

In addition to his main activity, he headed the private library of King Ludwig I from 1846 and after his resignation until his death in 1868. From 1846 he was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He was one of the best professionals of his time.

Historical Association of Upper Bavaria

Föringer was a founding member in 1837 and the hardest-working member of the association for the first four decades. From 1840 to 1878 he determined the structure, orientation and inventory of the association's library. This special historical library is the most important collection of the association. From 1839 to 1878 he was in charge of the editing of the Upper Bavarian Archive and conducted his own historical research. He was archivist of the association from 1840 to 1856, immediately afterwards he held the office of the second board member until 1870. On November 27, 1878, he resigned his honorary positions as librarian and editor, on November 29, 1879 he was made an honorary member. His important private library and manuscript collection remained in family ownership.
