Franz Xaver Schönwerth (from 1859: Franz Xaver Ritter von Schönwerth ; * July 16, 1810 in Amberg , † May 24, 1886 in Munich ) is considered the most famous folklorist from Upper Palatinate .

Life

Schönwerth was born in Amberg in the Upper Palatinate as the first of five children of the royal drawing professor Joseph Schönwerth. From 1821 he attended the local high school . From 1832 he studied camera science in Munich, from 1834 law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . After his first years of work as a legal trainee, in 1840 he got a permanent position as a council advisor in the government of Upper Bavaria . From 1845 on he was in the service of Crown Prince Maximilian as a private secretary and became his head of cabinet after his accession to the throne in 1848. In 1851 he became a councilor. In 1852 he moved to the Bavarian Ministry of Finance as a ministerial advisor and in 1859 was raised to the personal nobility by being awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown .

Schönwerth researched the life of the Upper Palatinate population between 1852 and 1886 and recorded his observations. Between 1857 and 1859 he published his work in three volumes under the title: From the Upper Palatinate - Sitten und Sagen . However, only a small part of his extensive research is published in it.

During his visits to the Upper Palatinate, Schönwerth recorded legends , fairy tales , tales , children's games , nursery rhymes and songs as well as proverbs . He observed life in the house and yard, described everyday farm life, customs and costume. Based on his notes, he left us a living image of the life of the Upper Palatinate population in the 19th century. Jakob Grimm (1785–1863) wrote about him: “Nowhere else in Germany has the collection been carried out more carefully, fully and with such subtle intuition.” In addition to the legends, fairy tales and customs of the Upper Palatinate, the Schönwerth Collection also offers precise insights into the Upper Palatinate folk medicine 19th century; The healing spells and blessings show that much of it is to be seen as the remnants of medieval monastery medicine.

Schönwerth was chairman of the Historical Society of Upper Bavaria from 1868 to 1875 .

Schönwerth died in Munich in 1886. He found his final resting place in the Old Northern Cemetery .
