Andreas Emil Hofmann (born December 16, 1991 in Heidelberg , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German javelin thrower . In 2018 he became vice European champion .

career path

Hofmann is a student of sports science at Heidelberg University .

Athletic career

Hofmann flirted long with the football to him his father from the Athletics could convince where he at local TV Kirrlach first as more fighters began and as such for MTG Mannheim changed. The contact was made through the mayor of his hometown Waghäusel , Walter Heiler , who had graduated from high school together with hurdles national trainer Rüdiger Harksen from MTG Mannheim.

2009 was a successful year for Hofmann. In June he reached 3rd place at the German U23 championships , in July he became the javelin junior European champion in Novi Sad as the youngest participant ever to win a title. In August he became German U20 champion and in September DJMM / DSMM runner-up with a single win in the javelin throw and a 4th place in the shot put.

In 2014, after injuries and operations had slowed him down for a few years, Hofmann was able to come up with a personal best distance of 86.13 m, which was improved by almost three meters at the European Team Championship in Braunschweig . After Hofmann increased his personal best in qualifying at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing to 86.14 m, he came in 6th place in the final with 86.01 m. In 2016 he took 3rd place at the German championships in Kassel .

In the 2017 season, Hofmann came in 5th at the German Championships in Erfurt . He was nominated for the World Athletics Championships in London , where he finished 8th. The General German University Sports Association set him up for the Summer Universiade in Taipei , where he won the silver medal with a personal best of 91.07 m. It was surpassed in only the second javelin throwing competition in history, in which two throwers were able to surpass the 91-meter mark, with Chao-Tsun Cheng from the host country Taiwan with 91.36 m .

In 2018 Hofmann became German champion with a championship record of 89.55 m . Two and a half weeks later he won the silver medal at the European Championships in Berlin with 87.60 m behind Thomas Röhler .
